US Season 3 - Hot Potato Cafe - CLOSED

Open or closed? CLOSED
Location: Philadelphia, PA

Episode Summary: 3 Sisters running the restaurant with their niece Danielle in the kitchen. The problems arose as they focused more on prettying up the restaurant and a bad review by a local newspaper in which the restaurant was dubbed as "Spuddy Hell. Danielle doesn't want to be a chef but is there to help out the family. The owners don't seem to know what is wrong with the restaurant and upon seeing the menu he asks the sisters to recommend a dish each, no one recommends a potato to Gordon.  Gordon orders he Hot Potato Soup, Spud Skins and a Shepherds Pie, Hot Potato Soup was "a mess" and "like lumps of glue", the 3 week old frozen Spud Skins tasted dreadful, Shepherds Pie was "2/3 mash, 1/3 greasy minced lamb", Gordon asks the owners to taste it.

Gordon watches a dinner service, the kitchen is a mess with no organisation at all. No one steps up to admit mistakes and everyone has given up.  Gordon dramatically walks out and the owners follow him, a tear filled heart to heart brings Gordon back in to continue helping the restaurant. Not happy with the current potato dishes Gordon challengesthe owners to make the best Potato dish with the winner going on the menu and Gordon is most impressed with Danielles dish. At dinner service Gordon noticed the portions were HUGE! Customers took lots of food away in takeaway boxes, taking with them their profits. They smashed the old massive plates, and Gordon bought in chef Richard to mentor Danielle for a month. He also got them free potatoes for 3 months. Gordon invites Mr "Spuddy Hell" back on opening night, he enjoys the food and they pulled off the relaunch with no dishes returned.

What Happened Next: Danielle left the restaurant and the quality started to slip back to the old ways, the restaurant was put up for sale on Craiglist, the website is down, phone disconnected and Facebook page appears abandoned.

Lloyd Whiskey Bar opened in October 2012 with restaurant, the menu looks great and reviews are good.

  1. It appears to have been replaced with a locksmith: http://www.yelp.com/biz/24-hours-locksmith-philadelphia-3

Prior to being Hot Potato, it was a state liquor store, but that was years ago.

  5. I live about 1/2 mile from this location. I never went there because it was so expensive for a hot potato place. The building is empty and the sign is still there

  6. I felt bad for Danielle while watching the beginning of this episode. She obviously respected Gordon Ramsay a lot and hated having to serve him those horrible meals that the restaurant owners were insisting on.

When she first shook his hand it looked like she was bracing for him to yell at her about the bad food (probably with the rants from other episodes of Kitchen Nightmares ringing in her mind) and to her credit she was pretty brave about it. I'm glad that Ramsay immediately put the focus on the restaurant owners during that scene and pointed out how they were basically misusing her willingness to help out the family.

Even though she ended up leaving the restaurant (who could blame her?) I hope that some good came from her experience with the show. Wonder if she is still interested in a career of being a chef?

  9. What a shame it closed. Chef Ramsay certainly gave them all the tools for this cafe's success. With all his help I wonder what went wrong. Even after Danielle's departure, they certainly could have hired a cook, not necessarily a chef. The owners seemed so happy, I wish them well.

    1. As is often said around here, these places are by and large knocking on death's door by the time Gordon gets there. I'm of the opinion that most of the time when Gordon does a US restaurant, the money he pumps into it turns out to just be a boost to the business's assets so as to let the owners sell without necessarily going bankrupt.

Honestly, with some of these places, what would you do if you got $30K in free equipment and remodeling work? I'd immediately start showing the place while it was still working well, get someone on the hook, and sell it as a working business rather than a fixer-upper.

  13. Danielle was amazing. so composed, so refreshing. and yeah, one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen at some random café. no makeup, and she can look....she is just very pretty, very nice smile. I had to see what happened to her after just seeing the show for the first time some 4 years after the fact. not surprised she moved on to nursing, and she will do well in whatever she does
